Evaluation 5

Creativity within the sequence

Having the confidence to being as creative and open-minded was the main goal to this film, and this was the reason why I chose to tackle this project alone even if this was my first project, I really wanted to throw myself and see what I could really do on my own. The result might not be the best, but however I'm proud to say this work had gone the exact way I hoped it did, despite losing the project the first time, It still gave the whole experience another story within the story.

Soundtrack

This was the most interesting part for me, as I've always wanted to make a soundtrack to accompany visuals that I've directed. The music part wasn't as easy as I thought, because I realized if you were gonna have music into your film, it will affect the message you're trying to get across or at least whatever you're trying to tell your audience.

Planning and Executing

Everything was basically D.I.Y when it came to pre-production and the production itself, however I had help from my best friend Natasha and my other close friend Matt. From drafting on paper scene by scene of what I wanted it to look like and eventually free-typing it down to the computer. When it came to production day everything went smoothly and we were able to get all the footages needed in the ghost tower by 30 minutes.

However you might notice a big difference in the rough cut and the final outcome as a big issue occurred when I lost all the information in my Mac and I was ready to give the film another until Mr. Harrison saved the day my discovering the rough cut and that meant I didn't have to do the sound track again. Lucky enough I managed to dig up some of the original footages and only had to re-shoot 3-4 scenes, enough to pull through.

Camera

Natasha's sister Natalie is experienced when it comes to filming, I was really proud of most of her shots as she's done more than I ever could.

Editing

This was one of my first time editing a movie besides a music video, I found it quite challenging but having the music to accompany me really to the weight off in a huge way, It's basically syncing the visuals to the soundtrack accompanied my Saranya's great voice.

I'm gonna be honest and admit the editing was rushed after a deadline was close but I really gave it my best as everything had to be done as quickly as possible.

Creative Confidence

Having the confidence to being as creative and open-minded was the main goal to this film, and this was the reason why I chose to tackle this project alone even if this was my first project, I really wanted to throw myself and see what I could really do on my own. The result might not be the best, but however I'm proud to say this work had gone the exact way I hoped it did, despite losing the project the first time, It still gave the whole experience another story within the story.

Planning:
All of my ideas were through free writing on the blog that eventually came to life during filming, the film really got to develop through different takes.

Research:
Most of the contents that became a reference to my sequence were from Vimeo and various VPRO interviews that I felt had a suitable vibe to the opening sequence. Those two main vibes being dark and personal.

Film Evaluation: Audience

Like suggested, I used YouGov to help me determine my audiences' personalities and in this process I used various series as a reference to my opening sequence.

I found out that the similarities between Misfits and Skins audience were striking, as to all having young female left wings as their main fan base.

Film Evaluation: Distribution (Draft)

If I had to put my opening sequence into a specific genre I'd have to go with psychological horror. But unlike most horror movies, you don't really get to explore the killer's mind, at least not until half way through the movie or near the ending.

Hopefully it will pick critical acclaim and eventually make it's way up. It can certainly be releasing online will definitely be another platform for the niche audiences find their horror movies however, I don't think it can be a mainstream blockbuster.

I think my movie would have be attractive to a certain type of audience that likes to explore the minds of a killer because in my opening sequence you don't really get to know the victims at all, instead you are treated to a one and half minute of the killer's plan and mindset.

Hopefully it will pick critical acclaim and eventually make it's way up. It can certainly be released online as it's one of the main platforms niche audiences find their horror movies but I don't think it can be a mainstream blockbuster. If you check out video platforms like Vimeo, you'll discover so many short films that have so much potential.

Opening Sequence Evaluation

In the opening you could see three kids sitting down and having a conversation.
The girl realizes that day that the boys were like all the others who only wanted to objectify girls like her and she investigated leading her to find the number of the girls that were tricked by them, very furious, she proceeds to plan her killing.

*A voice over of the girl accompanying the footage explain her plot to eliminate the two boys.*
*The girl points to an abandoned tower encouraging the boys to look at them.*

The boys became mesmerized by the building's magic (in this case, curse) and they proceeded to walk towards with the girl.

While they were exploring the building she reveals the plan of their execution. That's when two shots from a pistol were fired and and the camera cuts to the body of the boys laying down.

Camera Styles

It begins with a wide shot showing the three teenagers sitting next to each other. Then the camera changes to another angle showing the girl point towards the building, most of these shots are eye-level point of view. During the walk to the building we used the wide shot in order to see both the characters and the building. Most of the characters get a medium close up in each scene except for the killer in the end when the camera kept on getting closer to her face. It was switched from Mid-shot to medium close-up to close-up.

When the building was first shown most of them was a point of view shot, I would describe the beginning to be somehow of a semi-noddy shot. Because you get both the interviewer and the protagonist but in our case both were protagonists. A cut away was featured when the gun shots were pulled and it showed some parts of the hand and body. The process of framing was important for me because in most of the shots it featured both three characters, and the main one doesn't always have to be in the middle, my goal was to make sure everyone knew all three characters were supposed to be equal and there was no "main" character.

Rear Window Analysis

In the beginning the camera pans around and allows you to see the setting which is a residence
area consisted of middle class people in an urban looking apartment. As the camera lifts around you could see the district looks compact and average, the first character is a man in is 40's/50's laying down and judging from his sweats and the thermometer you can tell the weather was really hot.

The camera continues to move and you see a couple sleeping outside their balconies and as the obvious states (they were sleeping at the opposite sides) their relationship might not be at the
smooth stage, now the camera pans to left you can see an old slightly over-weight guy who seems
to be going through a mid-life crisis (notice the alcohol- assuming it's absinth which is very strong and the beer belly) what supports this is when the radio came up announcing "are you feeling old? are you tired?".

What really caught my attention was after this we see a shot called "the male gaze" where it focuses on an attractive women who seems to be dancing around and clearly her shot was a lot longer than the man's. You can see how the camera slowly moves up and focuses on her appearance.

Back to the man sleeping in his living room the mise-en-scene tells me he's adventurous judging from his belongings lying around (cameras, newspaper and lots of books). The time should be around the
summer because he was still sweating a lot.

There was a part where people were coming out to look at the dead dog, all of them came and see
except for one room and I suspect it's the killer's room. Everyone simply stared and minded their
own business instead of caring.

As Grace walks in you can see her taking care of her husband who only seems to notice her
when she does things for him.
